A poll released today by Rasmussen Reports states that 44% of Americans do not believe in human-caused global warming, compared to only 41% who do. This is a sea change from last April, when the numbers were 34% to 47%, respectively.
In a national poll of 1,000 likely voters conducted from January 15-16, with a margin of error +/- 3 percentage points, Rasmussen asked, "Is Global Warming caused primarily by human activity or by long term planetary trends?"
41%: Human activity
44%: Long-term planetary trends
7%: Other reason
9%: Not sure
Just as recently as April of 2007, less than 9 months ago, Rasmussen asked the same question: "Is Global Warming caused primarily by human activity or by long term planetary trends?"
During that survey of 1,000 likely voters, also with a 3% margin of error, the response was different.
47%: Human activity
34%: Long-term planetary trends
8%: Other reason
11%: Not sure
We're not sure what has led to this outbreak of sanity in the United States.
A decline in Al Gore's cult of personality, as members are drawn into Obamaism?
American excellence in science education?
The success of the Bush Administration's Frank Luntz-generated "Climate Change, not Global Warming" initiative?
The memo, by the leading Republican consultant Frank Luntz, concedes the party has "lost the environmental communications battle" and urges its politicians to encourage the public in the view that there is no scientific consensus on the dangers of greenhouse gases.
"The scientific debate is closing [against us] but not yet closed. There is still a window of opportunity to challenge the science," Mr Luntz writes in the memo, obtained by the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based campaigning organisation.
"Voters believe that there is no consensus about global warming within the scientific community. Should the public come to believe that the scientific issues are settled, their views about global warming will change accordingly.
"Therefore, you need to continue to make the lack of scientific certainty a primary issue in the debate."
Yep, I'm thinking that'd be it.
Sure, Luntz finally gave in, after years of being browbeaten by enviromental extremists:
NARRATOR: Today, Frank Luntz says the advice he offered the administration on global warming was fair when he gave it. But, he's distanced himself from their policies since.
LUNTZ: It's now 2006. Now I think most people would conclude that there is global warming taking place, and that the behavior of humans are affecting the climate.
QUESTION: But the administration has continued to follow your advice. They're still questioning the science.
LUNTZ: That's up to the administration. I'm not the administration. What they want to do is their business. And it's nothing to do with what I write. And it's nothing to do with what I believe.
Video available here.
But President Cheney Bush and his Administration have stayed the course laid out for them, leaving the brainwashed Luntz in the lurch. The fruits of his labor are finally being reaped, as Americans turn from the "science-based" nonsense spewed by the charismatic -- some say hypnotic -- Al Gore and instead pay attention to reliable and unbiased sources of information, like WorldNetDaily, Rush Limbaugh, NewsMax, and Glenn Beck.
Thank Heaven for small favors! Now, if you'll pardon me, the Hummer is finished warming up in the driveway. I just love my remote car starter! The seats are toasty warm and the windshield defrosted in only 15 minutes, and now I can get to Starbucks!

Over on the old site, on January 12, we asked you to vote for the best science blog in the 2008 Weblog Awards. Our comments at the time:
We recommend the unfairly maligned http://www.climateaudit.org/, whose host has been attacked as an "undeserving mouthpiece for right-wing hackery" by . . . well, one of the other bloggers in the poll. Barring that, "Watt's Up With That" (wattsupwiththat.com) has a great piece on this week's earthquake swarms in Yellowstone.
We wanted to post the poll here directly, but our current platform (b2evolution) is unwilling to cooperate with the source code. Darnit. So, here's a link: http://2008.weblogawards.org/polls/best-science-blog/
If you're looking for us under "Best Conservative Blog", we're a little too new to have made the cut for 2008.
The results are in.
Our #2 pick, "Watt's Up With That" took first place, and our #1 pick, Climate Audit, third place.
We don't need to mention the second-place blog.

Ricardo Montalban, perhaps best known for his role as fate-manipulating supernatural voyeur on Fantasy Island, died at the age of 88 today. Any guesses about his future?

We speculate that the man who spent years coming running when dwarf Herve Villechaize cried out, "De plane! De plane!" is being buried in a coffin lined with rich, Corinthian leather . . . like the Chrysler vehicles he hawked in the 1980s. Whence then?
A moment from his early years may help clarify his future.
In 1953, MGM cancelled Montalban's film contract; in order to make a living, he joined up with Lesbian actress Agnes Moorehead (who also portrayed a God-hating supernatural character, Endora of "Bewitched" fame) in the touring company of "Don Juan in Hell".
Somehow, we doubt that his time on stage has prepared him for the real thing.
Another hint, you ask?
A deeply spiritual man, Montalban once said that the guiding force in his life was his Catholic faith. In 1998, Pope John Paul II made him a Knight Commander of St. Gregory, the highest honor bestowed upon non-clergy in the Roman Catholic Church.
That's right. He was comfortable with the Satanic roles he played because he was a Catholic.

We truly feel sorry for Mr. Montalban. He suffered horribly in his later years, confined to a wheelchair. Now, he will spend eternity in Hell, all because he listened to Catholic priests who told him it was OK to pretend to be a wizard on TV, as long as he didn't practice witchcraft "for real", and that it was OK to worship Mary and eat Jesus crackers instead of giving his life to Christ.
Californicator Sells Daughter into Marriage -- Outrageous!

Marcelino de Jesus Martinez of Greenfield, California was arrested yesterday for allegedly selling his 14 year old daughter into marriage to an 18 year old man, Margarito de Jesus Galindol, for $16,000, 160 cases of beer, 100 cases of soda, 50 cases of Gatorade, two cases of wine, and six cases of meat.
This is completely outrageous, and deserves the condemnation of every Christian from coast to coast. A man's relationship with his daughter is a sacred thing, so where does the California police state get off persecuting this godly man for arranging a marriage for his daughter on what I think we all must agree are very favorable terms? The Bible is crystal clear on this, a daughter is the property of her father.
Consider, for example, Exodus 21:7:
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.
If a man can sell his daughter into slavery, then surely he can sell her into marriage, which is a far more desirable state of being!
We see the same principle in Deuteronomy 22:28-29:
If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her, and lie with her, and they be found; Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife....
Clearly we see from the fact that that a rapist must buy the raped daughter from her father, that she is, in fact, the fathers property. And, lest anyone think this is simply an Old Testament rule, remember that, in Genesis 19:8, Lot offered his virgin daughters to men who had come to rape Lot's male houseguests, and the New Testament tells us that Lot was a righteous man (2 Peter 2:7-8):
And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds
In the long run, the only way to put an end to this unconstitional and unbiblical governmental meddling in places where it does not belong, such as the bridal chambers of 14 year old girls, is to support Evangelical candidates for office such as Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. But, until the day comes when Sister Sarah sweeps the liberals out of the Oval Office, we are going to use the courts to fight this unfair state intrusion into our private lives in the courts.
I hope that all persons who revere Jesus and the Bible will unite and to defend this man for exercising his God given right to sell his daughter's maidenhead to the highest bidder willing to take her as a wife.
